20 August 2013, The detailed planning application for Cambridge’s second railway station has been submitted by the planning team of property consultancy Carter Jonas, on behalf of client Cambridgeshire County Council.
Carter Jonas was appointed last year (2012) to help co-ordinate the application for the Cambridge Science Park railway station and transport interchange which is scheduled to open at the end of 2015 on the site formerly known as ‘Chesterton Sidings’.
The planning proposal will significantly improve access in and around Cambridge through the provision of a new railway station building, the extension of the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway to the site, and new cycle and pedestrian routes.
The new railway station will form an integral part of the redevelopment of Cambridge’s northern fringe which is envisaged will accommodate new, high quality B1 commercial space complementing the existing business and science park locations in this part of the city.
Leading Carter Jonas’s work on the planning application is Richard Seamark who is the firm’s head of planning in the region and who says:
“This was a complicated planning application, given its scope and significance, encompassing 3,000 pages of reports and plans with supporting documentation.
“Submitting the planning application is the first milestone of many in a scheme that is so important to the city and the surrounding region.”
By 2018, the station should be serving close to a million passengers a year with expectations of 3,100 passengers per day within a year of opening.
