The Oxfordshire home of actor and comedian Rowan Atkinson has been brought to the market through Carter Jonas’ Oxford office with a guide price of £2,650,000.
The Old Rectory is in the village of Waterperry, just eight miles from Oxford. Dating from 1777, it is an elegant and beautifully presented Grade II listed country house set in 6.25 acres, offering both classical and contemporary living and enjoying enviable private grounds with river frontage to the River Thames.
Mr Atkinson bought the house in 1982 and has spent the last few years renovating the Georgian village house. After 34 years, Mr Atkinson is selling The Old Rectory to consolidate his property portfolio.
The five bedroom house has a drawing room, sitting room, kitchen, breakfast/day room, laundry room, half cellar, family room with bedroom/office above, indoor swimming pool complex with sitting/leisure area and steam-shower room. Outside there is a four bay garage, gardeners WC, bike store, wood store, greenhouse, plant room, tennis courts, and gardens and grounds.
Over the years the house has undergone modernisation and restoration. A contemporary extension was added to the rear of the house in the early 2000’s and now links the original Georgian house with its atmospheric reception rooms to the swimming pool complex creating a wonderful light and spacious kitchen/family/dining room with sliding glazed doors opening out on to a level terrace interspersed with herb and plant boxes with wonderful views of the gardens. An original stone cottage has also been incorporated in to the main house providing additional and flexible living space.
Within the original house are two well-appointed bedroom suites, three further bedrooms and a family bathroom. To the first floor of the old cottage is a large bedroom and adjoining home-office which if required has potential to create a further independent bedroom suite.
The luxuriously appointed indoor swimming pool complex has French doors opening out onto the garden, extensive pool-side sitting areas as well as a separate sitting area/gym opening onto the garden terrace and the rear of the house. There is a steam shower/changing room and WC.
Mark Charter, head of Carter Jonas’ Oxford office, who is handling the sale said: “The Old Rectory is an exceptional and elegant house. Mr Atkinson has spent a great deal of time sympathetically restoring and enhancing the house. All the original rooms to the front of the property retain plenty of character with high ceilings, sash windows and original fireplaces, and the indoor swimming pool complex is incredibly desirable.
