19 June 2012, The home of a former F1 legend could be involved in a race of its own – a race to buy.

The stunning Grade II Listed Georgian manor won't be in the average buyer's price bracket but for those wanting a truly magnificent home who can stump up the £2.65million guide price, Nunney Court at Nunney on the outskirts of Frome has to be in pole position.

The house was built in 1760 by Isaac Fussell, a member of the Fussell dynasty who set up an ironworks in Mells making agricultural tools. In 1949, it was bought by the Walker family and has been their happy family home for over 60 years. Rob Walker, the son of an heir to the Johnny Walker whisky empire, was one of the most highly regarded personalities in the world of motor-racing.

He was the first and only private team owner to secure numerous victories in Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix. His team Rob Walker Racing competed during the 1950s and 60s with Stirling Moss having been a regular driver.

Nunney Court has Ashlar elevations with a central porticoed porch supported on Doric columns and approached by a graceful run of stone steps.

The elegant proportions and excellent room arrangement are immediately apparent. The hall, drawing room, dining room, morning room, study and first floor bedrooms all enjoy fabulous south westerly views across the gardens and grounds to Nunney Castle and the countryside beyond. The reception hall, library and domestic offices are all at the rear of the house.

In principle, the main house has eight bedrooms, some with dressing rooms, and two of which are on the extensive lower ground floor. The master bedroom suite has an unusual barrel vaulted ceiling with floor to ceiling sash windows looking onto a cedar tree, There is a wine cellar, apple store, boot room, log and coal stores, utility, study and library.

Separate from the house is the Old Cottage with living room, dining room, kitchen/breakfast room, three bedrooms and bathroom.

Standing in just over 27 acres, Nunney Court has to be seen to appreciate its many features, not least of which will be its gardens.

The façade with deep herbaceous borders fronts a large level lawn with a magnificent cedar tree. A stone terrace borders the house with gravel paths leading to the courtyard coach house studio, a large open room with workshop, store and loft space, and walled gardens.

The gardens are arranged as a series of outdoor rooms which flow through high stone walls and historic planting schemes and include the cutting garden, a kitchen garden, orchard, soft fruit garden, herb garden and tranquil rock garden with a path leading alongside the river.

The riverside path passes Old Cottage and a path leads to the sluice gate and the weir. A bridge crosses the weir and provides access to the wood with a large pond which forms the southern boundary. Nunney Court is on the market jointly with property consultants Carter Jonas and Savills.

David Mackenzie residential partner at Carter Jonas said: “By any standards, Nunney Court is a very impressive property. It stands solid, mature and imposing in its grounds and will be a sure fire winner for those wanting country house living for future generations.”
