24 March 2015, Cycling legend Brian Robinson became the first Briton to complete the Tour de France in 1955 and in 1958 he became the first Briton to win a stage of the Tour de France. Brian is supporting the Carter Jonas Yorkshire Pedalthon and here he gives his top tips ahead of the ride on 8 May.
- Stay fit and healthy – You don’t want to be ill during training or even worse on the day of your ride so it is essential to take care of yourself in the run up to the race. A few ways this can be done are by getting plenty of sleep, cutting down on booze and being unsociable for at least 30 minutes after training.
- Training – Cover the distance at least once before the big ride. It is likely that you will be running on adrenalin on the day but a test ride is always a good idea so you know how much nutrition you will need. If you are new to cycling it is advisable to build up your training schedule gradually.
- Good fitting cycling clothing reduces wind resistance, doesn't flap and will keep you warmer on a chilly day. There is a reason for lycra in that it stretches and reduces drag. Also make sure you have comfortable saddle, shorts or long trousers, shoes and gloves or mitts - the three contact points which need care.
- Ride with friends to share the strain if riding into wind, you save 30% of your energy riding behind someone and even more if you are third in the group.
Cycling enthusiasts from the business community will take part in Carter Jonas’ Yorkshire Pedalthon on Friday 8 May. The race is being co-ordinated by cycling event company, Iconic Cycling Events and will again raise funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance as well as LandAid, which supports disadvantaged and vulnerable youngsters in the UK.
The Carter Jonas Yorkshire Pedalthon is open to both individuals and corporate teams, with individual entry costing £150 and teams of four costing £600 each.
