Carter Jonas is entering the second year of its sponsorship support for youth-sports charity – The Wooden Spoon – which is now at the heart of a new Metropolitan Police initiative in some of London’s most disadvantaged neighbourhoods.
This year will see Carter Jonas building on last year’s support for The Wooden Spoon which included a fundraising lunch at Newbury Rugby hosted by including David Smith (Andover) and Chris Haworth (Cambridge) and, as part of the charity’s outreach programme, sponsored rugby training in Regent’s Park which introduced many young people from some of the Capital’s to the sport for the first time.
In 2010, sponsorship for The Wooden Spoon is integrated as part of the Met’s ‘The Hitz Programme’ - a high profile initiative whose aim is to identify young people aged between 12-18 years old who are living on some of the inner city’s toughest estates and who are considered at risk from social exclusion and anti-social behaviour and to introduce them to tag, touch and contact rugby.
Underpinning the initiative is the belief that, as a team sport, rugby can successfully breakdown perceived class, generational and ethnic barriers to foster the kind of interaction and team spirit between individuals that works together towards a common goal.
Combining the unique ethos of rugby with the sport's leading brands and players – and programme sponsors - Hitz will use rugby as a stepping stone to provide these young people with personal, social and workforce development opportunities, educational support, vocational training and volunteering options that they may not have access to otherwise.
In addition to this main stay of support for The Wooden Spoon, Carter Jonas’s fundraising activities continue this year with Andrew Fallows (York) as Auctioneer at a Wooden Spoon St George’s Day Dinner in April and Giles Barrett (Knightsbridge & Chelsea) who ran the London Marathon to raise funds for the charity.
