Earlier this month, in collaboration with Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, Carter Jonas' Cambridge Property & Asset Management and Valuations teams spent two volunteering days planting trees for a regeneration scheme at Springlands and People’s Park in Sudbury.
The scheme is owned by Babergh District Council, with two sections of the People’s Park area owned and managed by a management company on behalf of the residents of the housing development.
The project aims to enhance the neighbourhoods for both wildlife and people. Funded by the Local Authority Treescape Fund, the scheme is part of an application by Suffolk County Council which included a wider planting area outside the districts.
Plans included the Miyawaki method of tree planting, where small trees are densely placed to replicate natural regeneration, as well as hedges, large oaks, hornbeam and native black poplar trees and fruit trees. Also included will be a wildflower / long grass area in the middle of the largest open space to complement Harp’s Meadow, a section of the original People’s Park.
“In total, we have planted 61 large trees (2m plus), 1,750 small trees and 1,250 hedging plants. These will enhance the site’s biodiversity value (new habitat and increased connectivity), provide ecosystem benefits (temperature moderation, air filtration, rainwater attenuation and carbon sequestration), deliver health and well-being benefits through increased tree cover, and provide a source of free fruit to anyone that wants it” said Richard Parmee, Biodiversity Project Manager of Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council.
Members of the Carter Jonas teams that took part in the volunteering days are Gareth Brewer, Nick Hood, Callum Staveley-Smith, Rupert Allan, Sophie Reeves, Alex Thompson, Kate Procter, Ben Gilligan, Ellie McGarr, Chloe Church and Emma Welbourne.
