Low stocks of straw due to last year’s poor winter drilling conditions has meant strong prices for straw are being achieved nationally and the 65th December Newbury Hay and Straw sale held on Thursday 10th December matched or even exceeded this current high trade.

Auctioneer John Read, partner at Carter Jonas, took the rostrum at Newbury Rugby Club to oversee 1,150 tonnes go under the hammer for the first sale of the season.

Being an earlier sale than in some years this coincided with a continued strong trade for straw leading to a 100% clearance for all straw on offer.

John Read, partner, Carter Jonas, said: “Holding an auction within Covid-19 guidelines was a challenge however a strong turnout of regular buyers and some new faces meant the demand for straw exceeded expectations with many buyers leaving empty handed.’’

“Trade for wheat straw was exceptional levelling at £143 per tonne equivalent. The top price for wheat straw on the day was £168 per tonne achieved by W K Horton & Sons, Swindon.’’

“Barley straw was in tremendous demand and averaged the equivalent of £140 per tonne to exceed the current trade with P & J Leighfield, Chippenham topping the barley trade at £160 a tonne for spring barley.

‘The Hay market remained strong for the small number of lots on offer. Notably hay topped at £102 per tonne equivalent achieved for some quality threshed rye grass hay from R W R & P Read, Winchester.

Read concluded: ‘We would like to remind potential vendors and purchasers of our next sale to be held on Thursday 21st January 2021 and would welcome entries as many more lots could have been sold on today’s trade with ease. Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year during these unprecedented times.’’
